FROM TOM PURSGLOVE:
I was delighted to hear the news today of Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service’s proposals to enhance fire cover in Corby.
Essentially, Northamptonshire County Council (NCC), following a period of public consultation, has announced new plans to retain the two existing fire appliances at Corby Fire Station and also introduce the new Cobra Intervention Vehicle – exactly what the More Fire Cover Campaign has called for. This means that three fire engines will now be based at Corby Fire Station, and the number of firefighters available to respond to calls will increase from 12 to 21.
As part of the campaign, I have made written representations to NCC, attended meetings, visited local fire stations, signed the local FBU petition, and met with Ministers, councillors, firefighters and the Chief Fire Officer.
A significant number of local people also returned the More Fire Cover Campaign postcards that were delivered to thousands of homes across Corby. Through the campaign, with the help of local people, I have maintained that, given Corby is a rapidly expanding town, we need more fire cover, not less and that our brave, dedicated, firefighters must have all the tools they need, in order to keep local people safe.
I am delighted, therefore, that Conservatives at County Hall have listened to local calls and will protect the two existing fire engines, whilst also stationing the new Cobra Intervention Vehicle at Corby – another important tool in the box to support our brave local firefighters.
A very big 'thank you' to all those who have supported this important Listening Campaign!
